I’ve photographed families in this town since 2010, and these are the seven places I get asked about most: what each one is good for, and what I’ve learned about timing and crowds.
Whether it’s a family session, senior photos, or photos for your business, the place does half the work before anyone smiles.
Why outdoor photos work so well here
Outdoors gives you four things a backdrop can’t:

1. Naperville Riverwalk
Best for: families, seniors, business owners who want downtown behind them
The Riverwalk runs close to two miles along the DuPage River: covered bridges, brick paths, fountains, stone walls, and a lot of landscaping. It’s the most photographed stretch of the city, and it earns it.
Why it works:
- The water does the background work for you
- Several different looks within a ten-minute walk, so one session gets variety
- Good in every season, best in spring and fall
- Works for posed photos and for the walking-and-talking kind
One warning: October weekend afternoons are busy with other families and other photographers. Mornings are quiet, and the light is better anyway.
2. Centennial Beach
Best for: summer families, seniors, a brand photo that doesn’t look like an office
Centennial Beach is a public swimming spot that reads like a resort: stone walls, water, open sky.
Why it works:
- Open, bright light late in the day
- Stone textures that look editorial in a tight crop
- Summer sessions, personal brand photos
It’s a working beach in summer, so timing matters here more than anywhere else on this list.
3. Springbrook Prairie Forest Preserve
Best for: families who want wide open and natural, fall sessions, anyone tired of brick
If you want tall grass, wildflowers, and sky, this is the one.
Why it works:
- Nothing urban in the photo
- Big skies at golden hour and sunset
- Fall family sessions
- Quiet, earthy, no distractions
Wear shoes you don’t mind getting into the grass.
4. Herrick Lake Forest Preserve
Best for: couples, portraits, small groups, a quieter session
Just outside Naperville, Herrick Lake has water, trails, and woods, and it’s calmer than the Riverwalk on any day of the week.
Why it works:
- Still water and reflections
- Wooded paths for depth
- Room to spread a group out
- Feels like a walk, not a photo shoot
5. Knoch Knolls Park
Best for: families with young kids, casual portraits, spring and summer
Knoch Knolls mixes open lawn, woods, and river access, with short walks between them.
Why it works:
- Open light and shade close together
- Room for kids to run
- Easy parking, not much walking
- Spring and summer green
If you have a toddler, this is where I’d send you first.
6. Downtown Naperville
Best for: business photos, headshots on location, the owner in front of the shop
Brick sidewalks, storefronts, public art, and the river a block away.
Best uses:
- Headshots with a city feel instead of a backdrop
- Photos for the website and the Google profile
- Event photos
- Content for a business that lives downtown
If your business is here, the best background is usually your own front door.
7. Cantigny Park (near Naperville)
Best for: formal family portraits, seniors, anything that wants a garden behind it
Technically Wheaton, but close enough that I count it. Manicured gardens, formal architecture, lawns, and backgrounds that photograph cleanly in every direction.
Why it works:
- Gardens and seasonal flowers
- Formal architecture and open lawns
- Consistent light and tidy backgrounds
